What is Rehabilitation?

Rehabilitation is a term used in many fields. The focus of the SSR is mainly on rehabilitation for young physically disabled adults, but not exclusively so.

Disability is complex and a more accurate phrase than ‘young physically disabled adults’ might be ‘young adults with physical impairment who have disability.’ The former shorter phrase tends to be used more generally.

The SSR defines 'rehabilitation' thus:

Rehabilitation aims to maximise autonomy within the individual’s own environment.

It is managed through a process of active change by which the individual is assisted to acquire the knowledge and skills needed for optimum physical, psychological and social well-being.
